Listening to the Word means understanding what it ‘indicates’ and does not ‘say’: the invisible connection. But there is also a ‘visible connection’. For Heraclitus it is of little value. In his fragments Heraclitus in fact speaks of two logoi: one is “private”, the other “common”. “Therefore we must follow that which is common … But although the Word (logos) is universal, the majority live as though they had understanding peculiar to themselves.” (B2) “The thinking faculty is common to all.” (B113)

The obscurity of Heraclitus’ thought reaches three levels. On the first, the soul can be moist or dry. For that reason it is death to become water (B36), while the “dry soul is the wisest and the best” (B118). On the second level the word can be “private” or “common”. On the third level the connection can be visible or invisible.

On one side there is the dry soul, from the bottom of which there springs a “common word”, which grasps the invisible connection of things. On the other there is the moist soul, to which belongs a ‘private word’, which stops at the visible connection of things.

There is nothing psychological about this immersion in the depths. It concerns the fate of mortals. It is they who listen to the word that indicates. The two possibilities are intrinsic to their fate.
